She went on to complete a fellowship in Advanced Care of the Professional Voice and Laryngology under the mentorship of the world-renowned expert, Dr. Robert Sataloff, MD, at the American Institute for Voice and Ear Research and Drexel University College of Medicine. This one-on-one training, under a pioneer in the field in professional voice, has made Dr. Gupta one of the best-trained experts in the care of the voice.

Dr. Gupta is a board-certified diplomate of the American Board of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery, a Fellow of the American Laryngologic Association, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. In addition to her extensive practice experience, Dr. Gupta has also held numerous teaching appointments, for which she has been recognized for excellence in teaching. She serves as an Attending Surgeon and Clinical Faculty member in the Department of Surgery at Cedars Sinai Medical Center, where she teaches laryngology, airway, and voice care. As a result of her extensive and focused training in laryngology and care of the professional voice, Dr. Gupta is able to offer the full spectrum of state of the art surgical and non-surgical procedures to her patients. Her expertise draws a diverse group of patients from all over the world, including prominent individuals from the music industry, business sector, fashion and entertainment industries, and physicians.

Since joining the practice, Dr. Gupta has been invited to speak at the university and community level locally, nationally, and internationally on topics pertaining to the management of the voice. Her emphasis is strongly on minimally invasive surgery for voice restoration as well as vocal rehabilitation through breathing and speaking. Her unique approach to surgery, voice therapy, and her constant innovation has allowed her to create many new and innovative surgical procedures that have bridged large gaps in current surgical techniques.

Dr. Gupta’s passion for care of the voice began at an early age. She developed a love for music, studying classical voice and performing in numerous venues, including choral ensemble, stage musicals, solo work, and a capella groups. As her love for music grew, so too did her love for medicine. She sought a field that would allow her to care for the voices that she valued herself. This search led her to the field of laryngology and study of the professional voice. As a laryngologist and a musician, she is able to communicate effectively with her patients and understand the nature of their concerns. She is passionate about their outcomes and personally invests in returning singers to their normal (or better) singing voice. She continues to study voice professionally now, believing that a maintained instrument can last a lifetime.

Dr. Gupta has been an integral part of the vocal curriculum at many major music programs, including the Department of Music at Pepperdine University and the Vocal majors at the Musician’s Institute. She has taught at the graduate level at the University of Southern California, Thornton School of Music, as well as to select groups of music professionals at musical conservatories. She has also affiliated with the Grammys and MusiCares to provide educational lectures to Grammys members. Through these activities, Dr. Gupta has helped vocalists understand their instruments in order to prevent injuries.

Dr. Gupta is a dedicated clinical research scientist and has published extensively in over 50 publications, books chapters, and online articles. Dr. Gupta has also been an invited speaker to many national and international conferences. Much of Dr. Gupta’s research has focused on care of the voice, from advanced diagnostics, cutting-edge treatment, and care of the refractory voice patient. She continues to actively innovate new techniques and develop procedures to maximize voice outcome while minimizing patient discomfort.

Dr. Gupta mentors high school students with a specific interest in medicine or the sciences. The students have an opportunity to enter a clinical setting and observe patients and the practice of medicine with a physician mentor. The students shadow an OHNI surgeon one afternoon a week for six weeks. The goal is to expose students to patient care that is humanistic, patient-centered, and comprehensive. Students are provided with the opportunity to observe patient evaluation, treatment and where possible, procedures and surgery at our Cedars-Sinai Medical Tower offices. Students also engage in professional-level writing, learning how to convey complex medical information. They also attend continuing medical and clinical education seminars presented by OHNI physicians. All students must have proficiency in all topics to be eligible for the Summer Internship Program offered to outstanding students who successfully complete the mentorship program. This program offers students interested in a career in Medicine and Surgery experience and information as well as Community Service credit.

The Foundation plans to expand the Student Mentorship Program to offer elementary and middle school students’ an introduction to medical careers. This program will provide these students with age-appropriate experiences to help spark an interest in the medical field. The Foundation will continue to develop and enhance its support for community education in the coming years.
